The continent’s top scientific institution, the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and Yale University in the US will on the 16 March 3018, host a pioneering symposium in Nairobi, Kenya focusing on The Power of Partnership: Strengthening Research in Higher Education.
The Breakfast Symposium co-hosted by Prof. Nelson Torto, executive director, AAS and Prof. Peter Salovey, 23rd President of Yale University will be held at Villa Rosa Kempinski. Prof Salovey is a leading expert on human emotion and health behavior. He together with John D. Mayer, developed a broad framework called “Emotional Intelligence,” which is based on the theory that just as people have a wide range of intellectual abilities, they also have a wide range of measurable emotional skills that profoundly affect their thinking and action.
Prof Torto is involved in promoting partnerships, mobilising African scientific African community, leading science advocacy efforts, and using research in policy making processes to ensure that science remains at the forefront of Africa’s socio-economic development agenda.
There are other leading scientists who will moderate the symposium. Dr. Segenet Kelemu, the fourth CEO of the International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology is a leading molecular plant pathologist with strong interest in development of novel plant disease control strategies including genetic engineering, bio-pesticides, pathogen population genetics and dynamics, endophytic microbes and their role in plant development.
Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi , executive director, African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), holds a PhD in epidemiology and has research interests that include migrant health, community participation in health, and the epidemiology of non-communicable diseases. Prof. Paul Tiyambe Zeleza, VC of United States International University (USIU) was served as the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Professor of History at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, USA.
