The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) Map competition 2022 is currently ongoing.
About 24 countries from Eastern and Southern Africa will be participating in the competition which is aimed at enhancing the role of Geo-conservation in protected areas management and environmental conservation.
The Organizing Secretary stated that the physical launch of the competition was done on Thursday 21-July-2022 at the African Protected Area Congress (APAC) that was held in Kigali, Rwanda at the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA) Regional Resource Hub Pavilion where registration for the competition was launched.
“The competition will promote the use of Earth Observation and create awareness of the data sharing geoportals and observatories to allow users to discover Geographic Information Systems (GIS) datasets and creatively use them to develop innovative solutions,” said the Organizing Secretary.
The registration ends on 30th September 2022 and the participants will be required to unleash their full potential to discover their passion for creating web maps, story maps, data dashboards or web applications.
There is a total price tag of Euros 10,000 to be distributed among the winners in the different categories. The two main themes are Terrestrial (Related to Planet Earth Land) and Marine (Related to the Oceans & Blue Economy). There will be four winners in each of the following categories: Forestry, Protected Areas & Wildlife (€ 2,000), Marine, Oceans and Coastal Information (€ 2,000), Land Degradation, Wetlands and Conservation (€ 2,000) and People Choice Overall Winner (€ 4,000). The winner will be voted by people based on the five best entries identified by the Judges.
