In the next seven days, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to cause floods in flood-prone areas in the eastern parts of Ethiopia, southwestern and northern Kenya, eastern parts of Burundi and Rwanda, and much of Tanzania.
This is according to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development(IGAD)’s Climate Prediction and Application Centre(ICPAC) weekly weather forecast.
According to ICPAC, rainfall is expected over most parts of Eastern Africa, with isolated parts of eastern Ethiopia, south-western Kenya, and southern Tanzania expected to receive heavy rainfall (more than 200mm), while south-western to eastern Ethiopia, most parts of Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Tanzania are likely to receive moderate rainfall.
However, the region’s weather body also predicts that dry conditions will likely persist over Sudan, northern South Sudan, western Ethiopia, central Somalia and parts of Djibouti.
Also, light rainfall is expected over Somalia, south-eastern Ethiopia, southern South Sudan, Djibouti and parts of eastern and northwestern Kenya.
Wetter than usual conditions are expected over southwestern, central and eastern parts of Ethiopia, most parts of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and eastern parts of Rwanda and Burundi.
During the forecast period, central and southern Sudan, South Sudan, eastern and southern Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia and north and eastern Kenya and Uganda, and northern Tanzania temperatures will vary from 20-32 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures less than 20 degrees Celsius are expected over central and northern Ethiopia, central to western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and isolated areas over southern and northern Tanzania.
