Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD’s) weekly weather forecast shows that most parts of the country are likely to experience rainfall in the next seven days with only North and Southeastern regions likely to remain generally dry.
According to the organization, highlands west of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Central and South Rift Valley and Northwestern Kenya are likely to experience morning rains alongside thunderstorms and showers in the afternoon with both daytime (maximum) temperatures and night time (minimum) temperatures are likely to be moderate.
Moreover, highlands east of the Rift Valley including Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi counties are expected to experience cloudy mornings with occasional drizzle, giving way to sunny intervals. Afternoon showers and cloudy nights with occasional showers may occur over these place.
However, KMD warns that Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties would probably remain generally dry with low chances of occasional afternoon showers in the next four days.
In these areas, maximum (day-time) temperatures are likely to range from 24 to 37 degrees Celsius while minimum (night-time) temperatures are expected to be between 16 and 28 degrees Celsius.
Also, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta counties will probably remain generally dry, however, occasional afternoon showers are expected over few places.
Maximum (day-time) temperatures are likely to range from 21 to 34 degrees Celsius while minimum (night-time) temperatures are expected to be between 11 and 22 degrees Celsius.
KMD further notes that occasional morning, early afternoon and night showers are expected over few places in Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties with maximum (day-time) temperatures likely to range from 28 to 32 degrees Celsius while minimum (night-time) temperatures are expected to be between 23 and 26 degrees Celsius.
A weather review for 16-22 May 2022, shows that most parts of the country remained dry. However, light to moderate rainfall was recorded over some parts of the highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central and South Rift Valley, the highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Coast and Northeastern Kenya.
Moreover, comparing the previous review period (9-15 May 2022) to the current review period (16-22 May 2022), the organization noted an increase in rainfall amounts over some parts of the highlands West of the Rift Valley and a decrease over the Coast.
KMD also noted a decrease in both day-time (maximum) and night-time (minimum) temperatures throughout the country during the current review period (16-22 May 2022) in comparison to the previous review period (9-15 May 2022).
